Continuous casting is one of the most demanding environments a rotary joint can face — high pressure, constant vibration, and the ever-present risk of water hammer. The 5000 Series was built specifically for it.
The core problem in caster roll cooling joints is wear — and conventional carbon seal technology, designed for relatively clean steam or thermic fluid service, simply doesn't hold up.
Rolls in the caster strand are continuously cooled by water flowing in and out through their journals, operating under high pressure, constant vibration, and the ever-present risk of water hammer. Scale, abrasive particles, and sudden pressure surges are routine. A joint that performs well in a paper mill or textile plant will fail quickly here.
The 5000 Series addresses this with mechanical seal faces made from the hardest commercially available seal materials — silicon carbide (SiC), tungsten carbide (TC), carbon graphite, and ceramic — used in the combinations best suited to the specific operating conditions of each installation.
All three variants share the same internal seal design, bearing arrangement, and material specification — only the mounting interface changes.
5000A is designed to be mounted in the roll drum using the customer's own counter-flange. This configuration suits retrofit installations where the existing roll journal geometry is fixed and the joint must adapt to it. Available in monoflow and duoflow.
5000B is mounted directly in the drum using a standard factory-fitted flange supplied with the joint. This is the preferred configuration for new machines or roll replacements where the flange interface can be specified at the design stage. Available in monoflow and duoflow.
5000C uses both a customer counter-flange and a standard backing flange to provide additional support at the roll journal. This configuration is selected for larger rolls or installations where extra rigidity at the mounting interface is required. Available in monoflow and duoflow.
Despite being described as a bearingless design — meaning there is no conventional ball or roller bearing carrying the rotor — the 5000 Series provides full rotor support through an extra-long carbon composite bearing.
Runs the full length of the rotor, distributing radial load evenly and allowing the rotor to run smoothly without the point-loading that accelerates wear in short-bearing designs.
The entire axial thrust load from media pressure is carried by a separate carbon-composite thrust washer — radial and axial load paths never overlap.
Separating the load paths means both wear at the designed rate rather than being overloaded by combined stresses.
Component materials and seal face combinations are selected to match your specific water quality and operating pressure.
